While on another excursion with the Snakedoctor and Snakenurse the Spotter, we came across a bunch of junk tractors in the field behind Antique Tractor Parts. This is one of the discarded old work horses. It is so far gone that I cant tell what make it is. Lightening was firing all around us as I was taking this shot. Then came some serious rain as I ran back to the car. There had been some devastating tornadoes in the general area a few weeks before, which added to our desire to get out of Dodge.
The owner had four really nicely restored tractors on site and told me that he had something like twenty more at his home. Perhaps we'll get back there sometime to see them.

Zimmer Tractor Brookville, Indiana. It's been a ton of years since I worked on a farm in Vermont. Back in the old days, we had a hay rake that was pulled by a horse that I drove. We also used pitchforks rather than machines like hay balers. That was tough work even when I was young. The next Summer, I worked on another more modern dairy farm in Vermont. This farm had tractors and a baler. I don't remember much about the rake we used, but I think it was similar to the horse drawn one, but adapted for a tractor. The farm also had a round barn which was pretty cool. The milking area had a conveyor that ran in a circle around the stalls, collected the day's manure and delivered it outside to the spreader. Unfortunately, when I returned probably some 30 years later, the barn had burned down and the fields had been absorbed by neighboring farmers and I never got any decent pictures of it.
I have no real idea how this thing works, but I'd like to see it in action. I just thought the colors and patterns might make for an interesting somewhat abstract image.

SE Indiana. When I took this, I thought the front axle was broken. However, when I looked closer, I noticed that the wheel is simply resting against the tractor's front wheels. While it is a bit beat up, I think it is still being used. Note the can over the exhaust - a trick framers use to keep rain water out of the engine of a tractor left out in the field.

Near Rising Sun, Indiana. Many years ago, a friend owned the adjacent 80 acre property. I helped him restore and add on to his log cabin and so met the now deceased owner of this hilltop farm, Clifford. This past Summer I revisited the area and found Clifford's old tractor wasting away in the field. His invalid and aged wife still lives in the farmhouse and his son works it, but hasn't bothered to move the tractor. To me, the tractor is almost symbolic of Clifford still watching over his field. He certainly has a beautiful view.
