Yesterday--our anniversary--Joan and I headed for Lake Michigan. The main activity was a walk through the woods to the beach at Hoffmaster State Park, near Muskegon.

Over the next few days I'm planning to post a few photos I took as we walked.

The fence/railing perhaps needs some maintenance.

The trail we took to the beach is largely about halfway up sand dunes. Thus the boardwalks.

This guy came out to greet us. Then we paid too much attention--so he ducked into his hole, beneath the roots.

Continuing our anniversary walk at Hoffmaster State Park.

The boardwalks soon got us to Lake Michigan, where we walked along the beach for a bit. Here's a tree perched on a small sand dune, with the lake beyond.

This probably speaks for itself. We found several dead fish along the way, in various states of decay.

We discussed that a bit as we walked the beach. When we were young, Great Lakes beaches were often covered with dead Alewives. Thousands of them. They stank.

Alewives were (probably) not native to the upper Great Lakes, having arrived via the Welland Canal and the St Lawrence Seaway. Their population has declined in recent decades.

Neither of us miss 'em.
