We'd expected rain. Our original plan was a somewhat longer camping vacation at Lakeport State Park, a bit north of Port Huron. From there we could have watched passing boats, wandered into town to watch them more closely, or explored Michigan's thumb.

As I say, that was our original plan. But a rather rainy weather forecast the week before caused a change of plans. We cancelled the campground reservation, shortened the vacation, and moved it to Port Huron's DoubleTree.

Then it didn't rain. But it was overcast for nearly all of our stay. This photo, of the clouds over Sarnia, Ontario, captures that.

Although it's not my main reason for visiting the town, I'd say the Blue Water Bridge is reason enough to find my way to Port Huron. I love those bridges. They're beautiful. And even though they're very different from each other, they make an impressive, and compatible, pair.

The clouds were pretty good during last week's visit, too. You may have already noticed that.

On the St Clair River, September 25, with Sarnia, Ontario, in the background.

Puna was the first ship we saw during our little Port Huron vacation, but she was hardly the last. Indeed, within a few minutes we'd see two more ships, and before long a couple tug/barge combinations would wander by. 'Twas a good afternoon for watching ships.

We'd arrived at our hotel at 3:00 pm and unloaded our car after we'd checked in. We'd seen on our phone's Marine Traffic application that several ships were due, so we headed out to the river and walked along the waterfront toward Pine Grove Park.

We first found Puna, as I noted yesterday. A few minutes later Algoma Mariner followed her upriver.
