This watercourse is the Hocking River in southeastern Ohio. It flows southeastward toward the Ohio River - downstream is to the bottom of the photos. A new oxbow lake formed here between 2015 and 2020. Oxbow lakes are cutoff meanders that form crescent-shaped, independent bodies of water. They slowly fill with sediments and eventually become vegetated. This one still has a downstream connection with the Hocking River.

The watercourse seen here is the Smoky Hill River - downstream is to the right. Oxbow lakes are present along the river's course - these are cutoff meanders that form independent bodies of water.

Erosion control structures appear to have been built along the outer edge of the river's meanders (click on the photo once or twice to zoom in).
