.. as seen from Via della Conciliazione. Partly because of later additions to the basilica and front facade, the dome is perhaps best viewed at a distance. Both the whole dome, and most of the drum below are visible.

At 136 metres (448 ft) the dome of St. Peter's is the tallest dome in the world. The completed dome is attributed largely to the vision of Michelangelo who redesigned the dome in 1547. His work was based on earlier designs, and the dome was completed after his death.

The rows of ‘obelisks’ leading towards the Saint Peters are also lampposts.

This view of Saint Peters from Via della Conciliazione became possible after controversial "urban renewal" begun by Mussolini, but completed after his death.

The boulevard allows this view of Saint Peters, but still obscures most of the Vatican buildings per Gian Lorenzo Bernini's intentions.

The basilica (and specifically the high altar) sits over the burial site of Saint Peter, the first Pope and Bishop of Rome. Construction of the current building began in 1506 and was completed 120 years later in 1626.

View of St Peters Square upon entering from Via della Conciliazione.

Bernini's colonnade both frames and envelops the square. The cobblestones paving has a pattern of radiating lines of travertine stones from its center; where a red granite Egyptian obelisk stands. The bronze cross on top of the obelisk is said to contain a fragment of the true Cross.

This huge square in front of the Basilica was redesigned in the 1650s by Gian Lorenzo Bernini to allow people gathered in the square to see the Pope. The Pope usually appears either at the basilica's front facade or from a window in the Papal Apartments (the brown building to the far right).

Bernini's colonnade both frames and envelops the square. The cobblestones paving has a pattern of radiating lines of travertine stones from its center; where a red granite Egyptian obelisk stands.

One more view of the front facade of St Peters before entering the basilica.

The church and square are enormous. To get a sense of the scale, note the size of the people, not those in front, but those in the distance right against the basilica in the entrance line.

The cross-topped Egyptian obelisk stands right of center here, and on either side are Bernini's colonnade which envelops the square. The papal apartments are in the building on the far right (behind the colonnades).
