Piazza Navona is one of the most popular public spaces for both tourists and locals in Rome, especially in the late afternoon and evening. It has been a public square since the 15th Century. You can see from its ‘elongated arena’ shape that was where the 1st Century AD Stadium of Domitian has been.
The piazza has three fountains, including the Fontana del Moro at the southern end. At the centre of the square is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) with the Obelisk of Domitian in the middle; it is by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
This is one of the two large squares in the Parione, the 6th Rione of Rome. The name of this district came from the presence of a huge ancient wall that had once been in the square. It had been part of the Stadium of Domitian, known as the 'Parietone'. The other major square in the Parione is across the Tiber River, at Campo dei Fiori.

The Fontana del Moro is at the south end of Piazza Navona. It is just as, maybe even more, beautiful at night as in daylight..
The basin and the four Tritons of the fountain are by Giacomo della Porta (circa 1575). The dominating central figure of a Moor wrestling with a dolphin is by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; it was added in the 1670s. Some say that it is actually the Roman sea god Neptune.
The statues at the fountain today are replicas, the original statues have been moved to the Galleria Borghese. This is one of three fountains in the square. On the left is the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.

The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) is located at the centre of Piazza Navona. The fountain has four large marble figures representing four great rivers surrounding a replica of an Egyptian obelisk. It was designed in the Baroque style by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1651.
