Looking outwards (north-east) at Piazza del Campidoglio. The design of the square on the summit of of Rome’s most important hill, Capitoline Hill, was entrusted to Michelangelo.
Symbolically, Michelangelo's design re-orientated the square northwards towards the new Papal Rome instead of the historic Roman Forum.

Another view of the beautifully designed Piazza del Campidoglio at the end of my visit.
This is considered by many to be Michelangelo's great triumph of architectural/urban design. He added the Palazzo Nuovo (at left here) to form a trapezoidal shaped square and harmonized the facades of the Palazzo Senatorio (centre) and Conservatori (right). Michelangelo's full design was not completed until 1940 when his beautiful floor paving pattern was finally added.

Another view of Piazza del Campidoglio the beautiful square designed by Michelangelo.
Symbolically, Michelangelo's design for Rome's first 'modern' piazza also re-orientated the square on top of Rome's most important hill towards the new Papal Rome instead of the historic Roman Forum.
The City Council of Rome ('Assemblea Capitolina' or Capitoline Assembly) still meets at the Palazzo Senatorio (at centre right here).

Detail on the left side of the River God Tiber sculpture at the Fountain of Dea Roma.
According to legend of Rome's founding, the river god Tiberinus found the twins Romulus and Remus who had been abandoned on the banks of the Tiber river and gave them to the she wolf Lupa.
The sculpture was originally a depiction of the Tigris River (repurposed to be the Tiber Rover). The transformation of the tiger to wolf is not entirely successful.

This statue was originally a depiction of the god of the Tigris River at the Baths of Constantine. It was moved here around 1540 for the Fountain Dea Roma. It was repurposed into a representation of the Tiber.
The god holds a 'horn of plenty' in his left arm. Romulus and Remus are included under Tiber's right arm; they are a 2nd Century AD addition.
