With the Coast Line closed between Chatsworth and Oxnard due to MOW work, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight was detoured through Tehachapi Pass in late April 2018. Here, northbound train 14 passes a BNSF train at Sandcut, nearing its short stop at Bakersfield for a crew change.

As the last light of the day begins to fade, a small group of passengers gathers on Track 3 at Fullerton as the eastbound Southwest Chief prepares to make its first stop after departing Los Angeles on its way to Chicago.

Almost indistinguishable among the hills and trees, a short BNSF Maintenance of Way train led by BNSF 5832 snakes its way through the Tehachapis.

After over a decade of planning and construction, the "Redlands Passenger Rail Project" saw its first Stadler DMU, which will be dedicated to the new service, operate over the rebuilt former Santa Fe tracks between San Bernardino and Redlands on April 1, 2022 to perform initial tests. The Redlands Depot on the left is the penultimate stop on the new line, which continues about a mile east to the University of Redlands. The depot was constructed around 1910, but daily passenger train service to the beautiful structure was suspended in 1938 after a flood wiped out a nearby bridge and passenger trains have not returned, until now. As the DMU made its historic first stop next to the old depot, it offered a taste of things to come in the near future. Later this year, the renovated and revitalized depot will host up to 50 daily trains, shuttling passengers between Redlands and San Bernardino, and points beyond via the larger Metrolink system, a sight not seen for 84 years.
