It's actually Angel Olsen's birthday tomorrow so I am a little early (better than late). I took a trip down memory lane yesterday to a vacation I'd taken to NYC in 2012 in the spring. One of the things I did was to see Angel Olsen at Grasslands, a fairly small club with an unusual backdrop that provided a great deal of cinematic negative space.
In times like these, I find myself contemplating the purpose of art in this world. It keeps me a little sane but it seems meaningless when placed against the tyrants of politics who have all the power and also the evil.
Yet, there really is this everlasting part of me that needs to create things in order to stay sane and I've always yearned with concert photography to be able to capture shots that no one else saw or could somehow. I really loved the momentum of the negative space and colors behind Angel and I felt like she was not just a performer here but a human being trying to make sense of a world of entropy, which I find all too relatable at this time.

Previously posted in 2017. We've unfortunately entered another era of America again and it's hard to recognize the people I once thought were kind intelligent voters as the same. However, let's not think about the evil orange monster today. This is still a day to celebrate civil rights and so it feels like a blasphemy enough that we'd be inaugurating a president who goes against all of these dreams for a future country and world . Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin (and thousands of other brave humans) can and should still inspire us to think beyond ourselves. I want to believe that eventually all things come to pass and progress is made, even if I feel pessimistic and cynical. We have to still yearn and dream for a world that is possible for everyone, not just those who are born entitled. All humans deserve respect, love and safety as well as the same opportunities to prosper.
This photo was taken in Antwerp Belgium...quote taken from the amazing James Baldwin and his novel Another Country.

Floating Heads by Sophie Cave.in The Kelvingrove Museum.
My night terrors continue around 4am-5am each morning and I still can't make sense of reality. It will probably be this way for the next four years.

When the reality of Trump became too much for me in 2017, I adopted Jarvis Cocker and now he's old and wise and keeping me company once again. I went to bed or tried to sleep right after hearing Trump was planning ICE raids in Chicago. I wish evil did not exist but it does. Jarvis keeps me company in bed all night long. I reassure myself with his purring. Oh, to be a cat and not know about all the damage humans can inflict on each other...what we are truly capable of. It's just too much most days.

You took us on our own cinematic adventure into the vastness of our minds and imaginations. Sometimes, it was horrific but it was always interesting. You made us curious about what was real and it became harder to tell the difference between reality and nightmares. The potential for entropy became endless. We felt we had experienced something just by watching and being open to your creativity.
With all that has happened in the past few months in terms of politics, I can't say you left the world in a better state than where it was when you arrived but I can say you left it a lot weirder and more open to discovering the unknown things below the surface. And in our darkest days, we will have your art to pull us through and remember there is still a possibility to dream, as dark and dangerous as it can seem.
Good luck on your journey. It is happening again.
Silencio
