If you haven't heard Jesus and Mary Chain out of Scotland, you've really been missing out on a crucial band. The good news is, you now have a ton to look forward to as their songs are always so rich and velvety with the rock elements forming a sort of texture that reminds one of a truffle melting on the edge of your tongue.
I photographed them the first and only time as part of Riot Fest 2012 last year. It was also during the Chicago Teacher's Union strike so I had been striking for 13 hour at a time for the last few week days and I had on a little sign "Ask Me Why I'm Striking." So many people from security guards to other photographers to die hard Gwar fans asked me. All I had to ask them is if music had been important in their lives. It obviously had been or they wouldn't be there. Then, I told them the truth-that in the current political agenda, there was very little funding for things like music and art and asked them to imagine not having that outlet themselves and what the city might look and feel like in 20 years because of it.
The current situation ia still problematic with the corrupt business charter school representatives slowly taking our best students for things like "scripted reading" It's something I call Educational Nihilism.
But, in the midst of all this turmoil, I knew that photographing one of my favorite bands Jesus and Mary Chain was something that would help me get through the curent state of things. I ended up missing a vote the Union had about whether or not they wanted to end the strike at that time but it ended up being not the most important of the Union meetings anyhow and I knew photographing Jim Reid would give me a little bit more peace on the moment of my death when it comes.
