This boobook turned up the other night, our first boobook here for more than 2 years. It proceeded to do its beautiful "book-book" two-toned call and sounded pretty close, so of course I grabbed the camera and flash and set out to find it. What I wasn't expecting was it to be sitting in a tree right in front of our house, about 3 metres up, and totally undeterred by me and the flash. It then proceeded to go through the motions of coughing up a pellet (hence the open mouth look). I took a few photos and then left it alone - it was still calling from the same spot several hours later.

This is one of 2 Boobooks that have temporarily moved in. They have been roosting in the same tree every night - not sure what they're hunting for around here, but their diet varies from insects or arthropods, small mammals (including bats), small birds, lizards, even frogs (certainly plenty of those around our creek and pond). They have been known to take insects in flight.

Each evening whilst camping outside Chiltern, at around dusk, we could hear Barking Owls calling from a distance away. Spotlighting didn't find them, so on the last night at dusk, we played a Barking Owl recording, hoping that the owls would come over to investigate. They did! These two flew right near our camp and sat here looking around for the interloper. They made quite a sight - and if anyone has heard Barking Owls, they sound just like dogs barking, and often a pair will engage in a rapidly rising duetting which culminates in quite a raucous screech. These two kept us entertained for a while, long enough to take some photos, but the light being so poor meant they're not great - it is my first photo of two Barking Owls, so I'm not too disappointed in the result.
