Construction probably began around 170 AD. The name Porta Nigra came in the Middle Ages; the actual Roman name of the gate may have been Porta Martis (= Mars Gate), dedicated to Mars, the god of war.
The Porta Nigra was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List ‘Roman Monuments in Trier’ in 1986.

The Karl Marx statue is a monument on Simeonstiftplatz in Trier. It was unveiled in May 2018 to mark the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx's birth in his native city. The work by sculptor Wu Weishan is a gift from the People's Republic of China.
