Originally part of the Port of Bristol and the birthplace of Admiral Blake, Bridgwater was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Brugie and was built around the muddy River Parrett. Well, it's muddy today.
It once boasted a castle which was surrendered to the Parliamentarians in 1645 who destroyed it the following year.
Here you can see the buildings have a Dutch influence from its shipping and trading past.
The beautiful Victorian Bridge was erected in 1883.

This Grade II Listed Pumping Station in Westonzoyland dates from 1830 and is one of the first pumping stations built to help with the flooding on the Somerset Levels. It has a small heritage museum dedicated to steam and had its annual steam fair today.

Built for town merchants, close to the river port, this row of houses date from 1721 and were completed by 1731.
