[Grenville Mellen Dodge was a Union Army officer on the frontier and a pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence chief in the Western Theater.

The house was built in 1869 to an exorbitant cost of $35,000. Chicago architect, William Boyington also built the Terrace Hill Homestead (Iowa's Governor's Mansion). This was one of the first houses in the area to have central heating and hot and cold running water.
Dodge was a Civil War veteran, railroad builder, surveyor for the Transcontinental Railroad and bank organizer who would also serve in Congress.
