Whilst shooting a sunrise on Bamburgh beach, Northumberland, with my “big camera”, I thought I’d try out my new iPhone 12 and take a quick snap. Processed using the iPhone Photo App.

It’ll be interesting to compare against the other photos when I’ve finally processed them in Lightroom.

Whilst I’m a guy who enjoys fun, I’m not normally a fungi guy! However I noticed these toadstools/mushrooms, or whatever they are, in the garden and decided to try out a few snaps with the iPhone 12 Pro, using the Portrait mode.

Using a smartphone for such a low angled shot pointing upwards, was a bit challenging. The power button, being on the side that was resting on the ground, kept getting knocked and so kept turning the phone off😖. Also, with no flip out screen it was very difficult to compose.

The portrait mode on the iPhone 12 simulates a shallow depth of field, but it can leave some irregularities that are visible when examined closely; though overall it’s not done too bad a job.

On a recent sunrise shoot at Flamborough Head, I quickly grabbed this with my iPhone, as the ground was so muddy, I didn’t fancy putting my backpack down in order to get my main camera out.

After our recent trip up to the Lakes at Easter, I’ve finally started to look through the images, with this probably being one of my favourites. It’s Kelly Hall Tarn, taken on my phone as I was playing around with compositions.

Liking the result, I set up my ‘proper’ camera, but I actually prefer this original version; I just couldn’t replicate the same angle using my camera on the tripod. Also by the time I had my main camera set up, the light and clouds weren’t as dramatic.

The other day a good photographer friend and I went out to Spurn Point for the day, the first real photo outing I’ve undertaken for @ 4 months. It was great to be finally out again with the camera, despite the long walk in, and the long walk back out; the last time I visited this location you could drive down the peninsula, unfortunately a few years ago part of the road was washed away by the ever encroaching sea.

This was a quick grab with my phone; I positioned myself so that the sun was directly behind the lighthouse, in order to provide a decent silhouette.
