Not quite as solemn a sky as on my previous couple of shots from Northumberland, though the wider shot would reveal a mass of cloud. However, I actually saw a glimmer of sunlight on this particular morning on my visit to Lindisfarne.

I’d gone to the island for sunrise but this particular shot was taken on my way back across the causeway, which is susceptible to flooding at high tide. The refuge hut is there just in case people haven’t heeded the tide warnings that are displayed at each end of the causeway.

I decided to strap on my 100-400 lens and shoot close the the ground with the R8 in order to compress the view, and to get the slither of light between the grey clouds and the road. This was my first real landscape outing with the R8. I also had my R5 with me with a wider lens attached, but I wanted to test out the R8’s abilities; it didn’t disappoint😁.

During a walk along Beadnell Bay beach we came across this rock against which some seaweed was aligned making it look like a fish, with the rock being the head and the seaweed the body. I can’t say for certain that this hadn’t been artificially constructed, but there were no footprints for some distance, and it was a receding tide. Maybe somebody had put it together at low tide and the seaweed had not had chance to get swept away. In any case it made for an intriguing shot.

A shot of Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland, looking across Embleton Bay, early morning after sunrise. I needed to get the camera very low in order to get the reflection, which required inverting the Center column of the tripod and having the camera virtually touching the water.

Luckily this location isn’t too far from me, which I’d passed earlier in the day. It’s lucky because the late afternoon and early evening sky wasn’t hinting at anything of note; there were no gaps in the clouds and so I wasn’t going to bother going out and hoped that the bales wouldn’t be collected too soon. However, all of a sudden I noted that the sky was breaking up as sunset approached, and so it was a quick dash to get there and set up.

I took the opportunity to shoot with both my R5 with the 14-35 lens, and my recently acquired R8 plus the 24-240. This shot is with the latter combination, which yielded very impressive results considering the price difference between the two set ups and the large range of the 24-240.

The bales were collected the very next day and so I’m glad things panned out😁.

I nipped out the other morning having seen the mist, however by the time I got to this location of Worlaby Church overlooking the Vale of Ancholme, the mist had already dissipated a good deal as the sun came up; I had spent far too long at another location which didn’t really yield anything of note. Ah well I can always return and try again.

I shot this with the R8 and the RF100-400, which I often have as the combination accompanying my R5, with whatever that maybe adorning at the time.
