A racing get-together for rowing teams and clubs from northern California. Here, a team of women from the East Bay Rowing Club in a boat for eight plus a coxswain. I had a fun day out watching some beautiful boating and athletic prowess. Held on part of the Petaluma River, north of San Francisco in Sonoma County. The sport embraces adults (Masters), as well as high school and college age youth. Some participants are grandparents, I'm told. Truly a sport for anyone who feels vigorous enough!

on city center's Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. It was a championship regatta for mature athletes. . . those over 21--many rowers were quite a bit over 21. Both men and women. Here, getting into lane position for a race. There were many boats and a beautiful showing on a pleasant, sunny day.

Yesterday the US Rowing SW Masters Championships were held here. It was grand to watch a few of the races and enjoy the beauty of these slim boats and their talented crews for some hours!
Looking east toward the Contra Costa hills and the string of East Bay Regional Parks that run along the spine of this coastal small mountain chain, another "save" for the environment.
This is a tidal lake that was first 'improved' in the early 20th century. It has recently undergone additional work which increases the tidal flow and benefits the environmental health of the lake, making it safer for fish, waterfowl, and people. The nation's first waterfowl refuge was established here in 1869.

I saw a number of grey heads in the boats today! This is hard work, folks. These rowers undertake rigorous daily training both on and off the water.
