Shot in 2006, near the border of Madison and Buncombe counties, North Carolina.
Barns come in many forms around here, unlike some parts of the country, where they tend to be more alike. And many are relatively small, as this hilly country did not support a great deal of dairy production in the old days. Most were small, multi-purpose buildings, with airy construction, permitting them to be used for the hanging and curing of tobacco leaves several months during the year.
This little log barn has obviously seen many uses over the years.
(Taken during the first weeks that I owned my new digital camera, and originally posted to Wunderground. Now relocated here.)

Another old barn from the Dillingham, NC, area. The open-work planking can be seen here, too. Doors are located on the west and east sides, four of them altogether. Interestingly, each section has its own two doors, so there must be an interior wall. The south, dark, side abuts the creek. Again, it's a two-story affair, with hay above. This one also boasts the family mailbox, as the building sits directly on the road. The paved highway has moved a bit since the barn was built many decades ago.
Looking east toward the Blacks Range of the Blue Ridge. Up top, where the dark pines and firs are seen, lies the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Shot October 28, 2009. Originally posted to Wunderground; now relocated here to Flickr.

You don't see much burley tobacco leaf grown or drying in our valley any more--time was when everyone raised it. It was the old "cash crop" in Appalachia, wherever the landscape permitted its culture. I was surprised to see this barn displaying it to the morning sun in downtown Barnardsville, opposite the post office. Don't be confused by the "Feed/Seed" sign on the building. This has no true historical meaning, except perhaps a recent one. About ten years ago, "central" Barnardsville was used by a film crew to shoot a pilot for a TV series that didn't sell. They left behind some of their set designs to confuse future historians! The barn itself is a true relic of earlier days. Originally the road was further from the building than it is now.
