Titan arum at Berkeley Botanical Garden today. The wait for bloom. The spadix is the core. The spathe is the ruffled surrounding part. The center has continued to elongate. The wait is for the spathe to open up like a ruffle. Many botanical gardens around the world have these plants which are native to Sumatra. When they bloom, every decade or so, it’s always a big deal! I discovered that Wikipedia even has a complete list of those in public gardens and the dates on which they bloomed, always attracting crowds.

UC Berkeley Botanical Garden.
The bloom emerged overnight, after yesterday's predictions of "2-3 days till bloom". There was a small flurry of visitation this AM when I was at the Garden. I hope many people have been able to see it today. I was able to get this quick shot while a lot of tripods blocked the way. I didn't hang around, and, frankly, I did not notice the unpleasant odor that the plant exudes. It "pulsates" the odor, they say.
This one seems to be a rather small specimen, according to other images I have seen.
Truthfully, I should say that it opened b/n 4:15 and 5pm last evening according the Garden news. The Garden closes at 5. So first chance to view was this AM.

Full name, Amorphophallus titanum, it opened late Wednesday. Lives at UC Berkeley’s botanical garden. There’s a lot one could tell about this strange tropical plant but I only know a few things I’ve picked up lately. For more, search it online. Wikipedia has an excellent entry. Note here at lower right how staff has cut a small square hole so that viewers may see the developing seeds within. They will reveal themselves presently.
It was Sir Richard Attenborough who coined the name "Titan Arum" for use on his old TV show, as he felt "Amorphophallus" (misshapen phallus) was inappropriate for family viewing. --so says Wikipedia.
