My guess is that the painted sign was added above this "basement" entrance when the hotel offered spa services to the general public in addition to providing the services to hotel guests. Bicycle parts are integrated into all sorts of sculptures and artwork seen in the Paradise Garden, but here the parts--wheels, tires, and chains mostly--are merely stored. For a while Howard Finster made a living as a bicycle repairman, and also used parts to assemble bikes for kids whose families could not afford the buy one, the NY Times says in its 2001 obit. It appears that after Finster had switched from bicycles to art, he had organized bicycle parts for smarter access and less rummaging around--hand grips and brake levers are found elsewhere. The back wall consists of auto hubcaps held in place with mortar. The other side of the wall that faces the street is part of a mosaic with countless objects held fast by mortar.
