The web tells me that use of continuous welded rails began in the 1940s. The long rails we see here were welded together from shorter sections at the mill, and were delivered this long. After they are laid, they are welded once more. Standard 39-foot and 78-foot rail sections that are mechanically joined make the railroad's clickety-clack sound. Continuous welded rails do not. (I am at a loss about why these are here next to a parking lot, and can't even guess how they got here. But I sort of wish I was there the day they arrived.)
