As the crew eats at a local beanery at Little Lake, Michigan, the locomotives for the Chicago and North Western ore train bound for the dock at Escanaba, patiently wait in the siding during the twilight of October 18, 1986. At this point, C&NW ore trains were still being powered by the big ex-Norfolk and Western Alco C-628s, but they were in the twilight of their careers too.

On Chicago and North Western’s ore line, the 4:00 a.m. extra ore load headed southbound meets the northbound 10:00 a.m. extra ore empty at Little Lake, Michigan, on October 25, 1986. Six big Alco C-628s from two trains fill the northwoods autumn air with the unique sounds of Schenectady.

Sets of Chicago and North Western Alco C-628s slumber the night away at the roundhouse at Escanaba, Michigan, in October 1984. The weather was dismal on this visit to C&NW’s Alco-powered ore line, and I thought I’d salvage the day’s photography by grabbing a couple of night shots at the roundhouse. To my disappointment, my home-made flashgun that fired 5B flashbulbs had broken a wire or two, so I thought my night photos might not work out so well either. I ended up shooting a few images with only available light, and this is one of them. Oh well . . . at least the roundhouse tracks were teaming with Alcos!

With the conductor doing some paperwork under the bright light in the cab, the engineer cracks open the window of Alco C628 No. 6706 at Little lake, Michigan, on the cool autumn evening of October 18, 1986. The crew has just finished dinner at a local beanery across the street, and will soon be taking the heavy load of taconite into the night towards Escanaba.

The last of autumn’s color is fading and falling to the ground, and there is a hint of winter in the air, as a Chicago and North Western empty ore train skirts the stillness of Goose Lake at Partridge, Michigan, on October 25, 1986. Three Alco C628s lead the northbound train, and in only a few weeks, the entire fleet of aging six-motor Alcos will be replaced by EMD SD50 and 60s, ending another era.
