The winter fog is finally lifting out of the valley where Union Pacific’s Pritchard Creek horseshoe curve climbs a western grade out of Durkee, Oregon, on the morning of January 22, 2013. The fog has left ice crystals and frost on everything it touched on this mountaintop as a westbound UP train approaches the curve far below. The upper level of the horseshoe can be seen in the snow above the train to the right.

While passengers move about the train in the relatively roomier upper level of an Amtrak Superliner train, the kitchen staff faces cooking hot meals and washing dishes in a more claustrophobic, windowless lower level of the diner. During a rainy station stop for Amtrak’s Coast Starlight at Portland, Oregon, on March 4, 1993, Rodger Carter and LeMarr Childs enjoy a few moments in the cool, fresh air from the open door of the diner.

An Albany and Eastern train heads for Weyerhaeuser’s Santiam Lumber mill south of Lebanon, Oregon, on the AERC’s Sweet Home branch on September 26, 2016. The train is powered by two GE B40-8s—No. 1841 (former Cotton Belt), and recently painted No. 1807 (ex-Southern Pacific) trailing. This branch is a former Oregon Electric line, later operated by BN and sold to AERC by BNSF.
