After switching the PotlatchDeltic mill on the west side of town, St. Maries River Railroad SW1200 No. 501 rolls slowly through the empty yard at St. Maries on the way back to the depot on October 7, 2019. Weeds seem to be reclaiming the former Milwaukee Road main line (far left) and yard tracks in this Idaho community that was a latter-day crew change on the on the Pacific Extension’s infamous “gap”.

On the morning of October 7, 2019, St. Maries River Railroad EMD SW1200 No. 501 pulls a load from Stimson Lumber in Milltown to the yard in St. Maries, Idaho. The diminutive train is trundling over the main line of the former Milwaukee Road Pacific Extension, and No. 501 is former Milwaukee No. 612 built in 1954.

St. Maries River Railroad EMD GP9 Nos. 103 and 101, have just emerged from their weekend slumber in the enginehouse at St. Maries, Idaho, on the morning September 27, 2021. The crew will soon take them to the west end of the yard to make up their train bound for interchange with the Union Pacific at Plummer.

Just west of St. Maries, Idaho, we wait for the morning departure of the St. Maries River Railroad’s Plummer turn at the Shepard Road grade crossing. Among the din of an awaking community and lumber mills, a faint sound of EMD 567C prime movers and wheels clattering over rail joints builds as the train approaches the crossing on a broad curve through dense woods. STMA GP9 Nos. 103 and 101 haul lumber and plywood westward to market on the morning of September 27, 2021.
