A Great Hornbill is master of all it surveys as it soars over the primary forest on the Thai-Burmese border. Thailand's largest Park is still home to some wonderful creatures, and I spent 10 days here watching some of them. This was taken on the ridge beyond Phanoen Thung.

The lar, or white-handed, gibbon, is found from western Laos right down to northern Sumatra. There are probably still 15-20,000 in Thailand. I listened several times to their haunting vocalisations in the mornings. The other gibbon I am familiar with, the grey gibbon in Borneo, sings with extended trills, while the lars I heard here were equally vocal, but more staccato.

We were fortunate to come across a family of four in a large tree by the road. They were quite relaxed, but after a while decided to cross the road. First the two adults leaped high over our heads across the road onto the top of a bamboo clump. The younger of the two offspring, about half the size of the adults, followed their example, and just made it over the road.

Looking straight up into another higher tree we saw this juvenile female slowly making her way along a thin branch. She seemed to crave our attention.

Holding a branch firmly in her left hand, and with both feet braced against the boughs, she was ready to leap.
