It goes under many local names in the UK - Church Broom, Hair Brush, Fairies' Fire, Venus' Basin, amongst many others.
Commonly known as the "teasing plant" or Teasel.
The stiff, spiky heads were used in the textiles industry for combing and raising the fibres of wool, a process known as teasing. The workers who did this were known as "fullers", hence the species name Dipsacus fullonum.
