On the last few miles before reaching Shap Summit, an unidentified Stanier Black 5 hauls a mixed freight banked by one of Tebay's 2-6-4 tank engines up the 1:75 ruling gradient.
Taken on 28 November 1964, this would have been an early snow fall for the Westmorland Fells. The photographer is to be congratulated with managing to reach this location back in those days. Today capturing this image would require a few miles drive from the m6 followed by a mile of hiking fron the Shap Wells Hotel road.
Before the m6 motorway was built, reaching this location would have required 15 miles travelled on the A6 road from Kendal, tracking up hill and down dale on snow covered roads.
Taken by an unknown photographer, now part of my collection.
