A slightly "arty" view of 40024/224 "Lucania" crossing Leven Viaduct near Ulverston with a southbound civil engineers train on the 11th September 1983. A fantastic array of different types of ballast wagon - not to mention the brake van!

An Inter City 125 comes off the High Level Bridge at Newcastle on the 21st April 1984. The shot is taken from the opposite bank of the Tyne in Gateshead and notice how the bridge dwarfs the buildings below, making them look like part of a model village!

40143 waits to depart from Manchester Victoria with 1P10 10:15 Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North. 25th July 1984.

I essentially missed the Class 40s in active service except for the odd happenstance such as this. At the time I was mostly interested in photographing steam and just took pictures of diesels when I came across them while waiting to photograph a steam working. In this case, about an hour before taking this picture I'd just bought an Olympus OM4, which at the time was very expensive and "state of the art". I then returned to Man Vic in order to phot the steam-hauled "Wilsons Brewery Specials". Before I did so, I thought I'd better try out the camera's spot-metering system and picked the first subject which was in "awkward" light in order to do so. A quick read of the instruction book and press the shutter! As you can see, the camera dealt with it very well, although like so many of my shots at the time, I chopped the back of the train off, the loco being all-important!

Incidentally, the shot of the Brewery Special worked out OK also, although it demanded no special metering technique:
