4468 "Mallard" coasts under the massive signal gantry at Miles Platting with the RCTS Diamond Jubilee special of the 30th July 1988. The train had got here via the Hope Valley and was soon to return to York via the Standedge route. I also photographed it later near Mossley. Apart from "Mallard", which has long-since vanished from the main line, the fine signal gantry is no more, nor is Wilson's Brewery, which is visible in the background.

60009 "Union of South Africa" takes water at Garsdale while in charge of the "Cumbrian Mountain Express" on which I was travelling. 16th August 1984. I don't somehow think that these watering arrangements would be allowed now, given the increased service on the line - nor would the passengers be allowed to wander about on the running lines, as we were.

60009 "Union of South Africa" performs a run-past at Appleby for the passengers on the "Cumbrian Mountain Express" of the 16th April 1984. I've only put this photo up to compare it with my friend Roger Sutcliffe's shot taken at the same time. Mine suffers from being very tightly cropped, probably due to the fact that I had a medium telephoto lens on my camera, which was usually the case in those days. God knows why I didn't use a 50mm as standard, as it would have been far better in situations like this, where there were lots of people trying to get the same shot and space was at a premium. Ah, well I'd only just started then and you live and learn.

4498 "Sir Nigel Gresley" is seen at Wennington signal box during a photo run-past during the bottom leg of a "CME" on which I was travelling. 24/8/85. The box was demolished in 2005.
