The sun sets behind the new and old churches in Heptonstall. From a scanned transparency taken on the 4th April 1984. The new church (Church of St Thomas the Apostle) in Heptonstall dates from 1854. The old church, dedicated to St Thomas A Becket dates from 1260 and was badly damaged in a storm in 1847. The ruins are open to the public. The graveyard which surrounds both churches is famous for being the last resting place of Sylvia Plath, the wife of Ted Hughes.

Hebden Water. Hardcastle Crags. From a scanned transparency taken on November 11th 1984. At the time I lived in Hebden Bridge and used to visit HC very frequently. Sad to say, I haven't visited this renowned beauty spot for many years. It's owned and managed by the National Trust and has probably changed a lot since I last went. Even in the Victorian age it was a much-visited tourist honey-pot with people coming from miles around at holiday periods and weekends. The nearest station, Hebden Bridge, used to be kept very busy with the visitors, who travelled there by train before undertaking the 1.5 mile walk to the Crags.

Fog in the confluence of the valleys of the River Calder and Hebden Water below Pecket Well, a hilltop settlement above Hebden Bridge. This was taken late in the afternoon of the 27th December 1984, so the fog must have lingered all day in the valley bottom. The well-known landmark called Stoodley Pike stands sentinel on the far hillside.
