No. 143 stands at Dinas having just arrived with the late-running 09:00 from Caernarvon to Waunfawr. 9/9/2006. The NGG 16 Garratts are really impressive locos up-close but were small in South African terms. I've only seen one SA main line Garratt, the GL in Manchester Museum of Science and Industry - and it's BIG, despite being 3' 6" gauge!

Ex-SAR, NG15 Class 2-8-2, No.133 stands at Dinas on the 9th September 2006. This is one of two NG15s on the Welsh Highland Railway - the other one No. 134 is currently under restoration. This one seems to be deteriorating in the open at Dinas still. I wonder whether it will ever see restoration.

Ex-SAR, NGG16 Garratt, No 143 approaches Ryhd Ddu with the 12:15 from Caernarvon. 9/9/2006. At the time Ryhd Ddu was the eastern terminus of the line. Trains only started running the full length of the line between Caernarvon and Portmadog in 2011. The shot was taken on my first and only visit to the Welsh Highland Railway, which was holding a special event that weekend, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

No. 138 heads back down the hill from Rhyd Ddu with the 12:15 Rhyd Ddu to Caernarvon service. 9/9/2006. Despite appearances this was a passenger service, but like a lot of services that day, it had freight wagons next to the loco. I've no idea why - extra brake force perhaps.
