This was the last shot of the day, as it had got too hot to be walking about, but I'd had a great time on the railway thanks to my lineside pass. Once again, a Kirklees Light Railway Gala had delivered the goods. Here's to next year!

No.1 "Green Goddess" leaves Clayton West with the 15:00 to Shelley during the Kirklees Light Railway's "Greenly Gathering" Gala. 9/9/2023. This location always delivers, in my experience. Even when it was as hot as the day had become by this time, there was still plenty of exhaust as the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Pacific got into its stride away from the station.

Only when you put a Kirklees Light Railway train in context with the full-size railway infrastructure that still exists, do you see just how much smaller the current railway is than when it was operated by British Railways and the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway.

"River Esk" approaches Skelmanthorpe with the 12:00 from Clayton West to Shelley during the "Greenly Gathering" at the Kirklees Light Railway. 9/9/2023. I still prefer to use the name "Kirklees Light Railway" instead of "Whistlestop Valley" which the new owners have re-branded the railway as - presumably to better catch the parent and child market, which is their main audience. It's only at galas that the railway caters for enthusiasts and I hope that this continues, as it's a great little railway, especially when they bring in visiting locos which are normally based a long way away from West Yorkshire.
