I attended the "Thunder Day" at Elvington Air Museum on the 16th March 2024. The purpose of the day was to experience engine start-ups of various aircraft, although not all of them co-operated. Still it was well worth going and I'd highly recommend a visit. I shall certainly be going again.
Here we see the "gate guardian" at Elvington - a replica Spitfire Mk 1a, R6690. One of these days I'll see a real Spitfire!

I enjoyed seeing this replica Messerschmitt Bf109-G-6 at Elvington Air Museum. Although only a replica, it's the first ME 109 that I've seen in the flesh. Very impressive - and scary!

This Handley Page Halifax III at Elvington is a re-creation using parts from at least three different aircraft. The front section is a totally new build by the very skilled staff at the museum. On the side nearest the camera it carries the name "“Friday 13th” - a 158 Squadron aircraft which completed 128 missions while based at RAF Lissett, Yorkshire in World War II, which was scrapped after the war. The other side is painted as "NP763" of 346 ‘Guyenne’ Squadron of the RAF, which was based at Elvington during 1944. I just couldn't believe just how large this aircraft was and I was amazed to be in its presence, although I knew that it was at Elvington.

This Douglas C47 "Dakota" was on the schedule for the engine start-ups, but unfortunately had an engine fault so was just on display in the hangar. Still, it was great to see it and to take the opportunity to go inside it, which you were allowed to do. I never thought I'd be inside one of these and see where the paratroops sat as they were conveyed to their drop zones. I don't know how they did it!

Handley Page Victor K2, XL 231 "Lusty Lindy" is being prepared for its start-up at the Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington. 16th March 2024. This is another very impressive machine, which again I never thought I'd see in the flesh. It was very loud!
