It is not that long since the Phoenix Park in Dublin's City Centre was the scene for motor car racing each year, where large crowds gathered to see the excitement. Back in 1929, the Irish International Grand Prix was a major event in the motor racing calendar, and the Ternan family have captured so much of the excitement and the scene in this assembly of photographs!

Remembering our former Olympians today and as this is coming to the end of the games we have yet another legend of Irish sport to end our tribute.
There are some sports people who just stand out, not only for their wins but for their courage, talent and total determination not to give up and John Treacy was one of those. His run in the marathon at the Los Angeles Olympics was just such a race. He had never run a Marathon before and was part of a field of superb Marathon runners but he was battling right to the end and his finish with the British runner showed his class.

Continuing the practice of posting medals commemorating Irish Olympians we have a photo of Irelands first Gold Medal winning boxer Michael Carruth. Michael won gold at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and anybody who watched the fight will remember his reaction when his victory over his Cuban opponent was announced! He jumped up into the air as though he was never going to come down again!

... no surname necessary! To celebrate the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, we present for your enjoyment an Irish sporting great, Sonia O'Sullivan, known everywhere in Ireland by her first name alone. Do you remember this Autumn day in 2000?

This morning at 09:05 (in Dublin), Sonia's daughter Sophie O'Sullivan is running in Heat 1 of the Women's 1500m. We wish Sophie (and Sarah Healy too) Bonne Chance!

p.s. delira to be featuring a living photographer from our NLI archives. We've admired his work only once before, but hope to feature more...

The famous Links Golf Course at Portmarnock in North County Dublin apparently taken before it was famous? The rough looks very rough and the green doesn't look much better though the attendance seem very interested in the proceedings. Will anybody score a hole in one by identifying the hole in the image! One of Ms. Maddock's renowned sticky buns with extra stickyness for the one who does!
