The offices of the Waterford News in the aftermath of a fire on Sunday, 26 August 1923.

On the same day that this photo was taken, the Irish Times reported:
“On Sunday night the offices of the Waterford News, whose policy latterly has been markedly Republican, were burned down. The commercial and editorial offices, the latter containing many valuable historical books and records of Waterford County and City, as well as stores containing hundreds of pounds worth of paper, were completely destroyed. The Civic Guards were quickly on the scene, with members of the newspaper staff. The City Fire Brigade succeeded in saving all the machinery and type. The damage, however, is estimated at several thousands, and is not wholly covered by insurance.”

Unsure of the location of the Waterford News at this time, so if anyone knows, please speak up...

This is the Keane family of Cappoquin House, Waterford. Seated in the cap is Sir John Keane (1873-1956), 5th Baronet. His successor, Richard, is not pictured here. However, the second and third sons are - George (right) and Frederick (left). Unfortunately have no names for the wife(?) and daughter.

Cappoquin House was burnt in 1922, but was later restored by Sir John Keane, who used moulds from London to reproduce the internal plasterwork.

Members of the Fitzgerald family at the door of their home, Waterford Castle, which is on an island in the River Suir. The Fitzgeralds had a long association with the island dating back to the 12th century. Edward Fitzgerald (1809-83), who translated The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam was an ancestor of the family members pictured here.

Almost certainly the children of a Mrs M.J. Murphy of John's Hill, Waterford. Despite the clothing, we're fairly sure the child on the left is a boy. Taken in Poole's Photographic Studio, this photo boasts a fine backdrop depicting the Metal Man in Tramore, Waterford.

Having long since suggested that the kids pictured here were the children of Matthew Murphy (a cooper) and Hannah Murphy (nee Hutchinson), Niall McAuley has all but confirmed that these are Kitty Murphy (4) and Willie Murphy (2). Others have offered suggestions as to why the outfits were selected as they were. See comments for more....
