To celebrate 10 years of us Three Marys running the National Library of Ireland's Flickr, we decided to go mad altogether and hold a caption competition.
• The competition is open to anyone who would like to enter
• One entry per person
• To enter, add a comment with your proposed caption for the image above (which we first discussed back in March 2016)
• The best, funniest, or most appropriate caption, in the opinion of the judges, will be deemed the winner
In addition to the glory, the winner will receive a framed copy of their favourite photograph from the NLI Flickr photostream, and a €100 book token. N.B. Bribes or offerings of virtual sticky buns will not disqualify, but won't get you anywhere either.
The winner will be announced on Friday, 17 January 2025.

70 Million is such a big number!
The sticky buns are flying around here like snuff at a wake. We are all so pleased here at Library Towers that we have reached 70M views on our Flickr stream.
We could not have reached this fantastic number without all of you who come on here day after day to view and comment on the photos from our National Library of Ireland collections. It is a great and ongoing pleasure to share with you these excellent photographs from excellent photographers.
We thank each and every one of you for your continued support.

Another Day to fly the bunting from the very top of Library Towers, as the NLI Flickr photostream has reached 60 million views today!
We have said this before and I know that we will have the opportunity to say it again, such a remarkable number was only reached thanks to the many contributors who have visited and provided such interesting and detailed background to the various images. So today the congratulations are to all of you:
(a) all those who follow and enjoy the images,
(b) all those who give the images favourite tags and
(c) especially those who delved into the past and have provided such fascinating insight into the times, the people, the places and the context of the images.
To celebrate the achievement we are planning a special tour of our Photo Detectives Exhibition on the 28th of March.
On that day, we will have
- the lunchtime tour itself
- “meet the curator” all day (Maeve in the morning, Nikki in the afternoon)
- and will be inviting people to come in and take the family trail.
If you are free on the day we would be delighted if you could join us.
