An interesting portrait from the Sheehy Skeffington Photographic Collection, and from the notes in the Catalogue we see that Marguerite B. Palmer was a hunger striker and a member of the IWFL. What more can you tell us about this leading suffragette?

The Bard of Thomond, Michael Hogan, penned a poem in the 1800's called "Drunken Thady and the Bishop's Lady"!. The lady in question was allegedly wife of a Bishop of Limerick and having lived a life of debauchery her ghost frequented Thomond Bridge in Limerick. The young lady in this image was far from a debauchee and looks very well on her wedding day. A curious feature of the image is how few of the party are actually looking at the lens. Long exposure no doubt a factor?

Photographer: Possibly William Steuart Trent?

Date: between ca. 1845 and 1871 Saturday, 7 August 1869

NLI Ref.: ALB393
