In the 1860's this area was swarming with miners trying to strike it rich in the goldfield. Most made very little money and many died in freezing conditions in the winter.

Mitchell's Cottage

Built with great precision near Fruitlands by Andrew Mitchell, who applied the stone masonry techniques he had learned from his father in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. He started in the 1880s, but the cottage wasn't finished until 1904. Ten children were raised here!

After a drought old stumps were exposed. The reflected trees behind them seemed an odd juxtaposition. There was a yappy dog chasing the birds which I cut out ;-)

The spray was coming through between the trees making interesting patterns with the backlighting. Got a bit wet taking this.
