Foggy woods in early spring, outskirts of Sutton, Quebec. My parents retired there, to the Eastern Townships, in the early 1980s. During visits over the years, until my mom's death in 2007, I discovered the trails out behind their house. These eastern mixed hardwood-softwood forests around which I grew up are very different from the familiar forests of western Canada that I've known as an adult.

Walking in the James Bay neighbourhood of Victoria, British Columbia, I noticed this fence with a mad tangle of trees on the other side. It was sunny and the shadows were impossible to manage, so I made a note of the location and returned on a day when the light was softer. The reduced contrast allowed the camera to penetrate a little into this amazing backyard jungle - I didn't have to expose to prevent blowout from sunshine on the white fence.

This is the only representative of the Arum family native to the Pacific Northwest. It does exude a skunk-like odour, not entirely unpleasant. Near Victoria, BC, it is already blooming in wet woodland areas. For this shot I spread the tripod legs wide and as low as I could collapse them, and pushed a wide angle lens close to one plant.

Another flower shot from the waning days of film; I made this one the day before yesterday's Calypso Orchid photo. Despite its skunky odour, Lysichitum americanum is a welcome sight in early spring along Canada's west coast and beyond (Alaska to California, and east at moderate elevations through the Cascades to the Rockies).
This plant often grows in muddy places, so it's quite likely that I got muddy photographing it, and it's equally likely that I didn't care. At the time I was living at the edge of a forested area and would walk its paths often, usually in solitude.
Camera: Nikon F100; lens: Nikon 105mm macro (manual focus). Tripod, cable release. Photographed in the forested wildlands of Royal Roads University, in Colwood, Vancouver Island, BC (Canada); scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide.
