I recently visited another of my old haunts, and was pleased to see that the Dippers are renovating their old nest in the usual place, on a vertical cliff face along the Sooke River. This one has paused at river level with some soft moss to use as nest liner; next month they will be raising young. Sooke Potholes Regional Park, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

This American Dipper is gathering moss to line its nest. In the background is the rushing, green Sooke River; wave surges would regularly wash over this rock. I had a small space to sit, with my back to a rock wall and sharp stones beneath my butt; not very comfortable, but worth putting up with for an hour or so for the chance of photographing the dipper pair coming and going. When I crawled out onto this rocky outcrop, for some reason I thought of the old rock-paper-scissors game. In this case, however, water covers rock. I also remembered that water drowns people, sometimes in this very river, so when finished I turned around v-e-r-y slowly and carefully, and crawled back to safety.
