This is the only photo I've ever captured of an Eastern Kingbird in which you can see a hint of the colorful "crown" of feathers they can raise on their head. There's just a bit of yellow visible here. I've seen it fully visible in some other photos, but looking just now on the allaboutbirds.org website, this feature doesn't even seem to be mentioned. The plant it's perched on is last year's Evening Primrose. Anoka County, MN 06/06/23

Flycatchers can be pretty difficult to identify from one another as they tend to look really similar. You're always safer going by their call and I was lucky enough to have this one, an Eastern Wood Pewee, calling right in front of us. Honestly I can't say I've ever actually witnessed one calling before. They are quite loud! You generally hear them from a way away, and it usually sounds like it's coming from high up in the treetops as well. Another instance where I should have used my phone to capture the sound, darnit. There was strange light at the time I snapped this photo of an Eastern Kingbird. Skies were ominously dark with storms while the sun poked through periodically. Anoka County, MN 08/06/22

There have also been some Eastern Kingbirds at the holding ponds recently. This one perched briefly on one of the Hawthorn trees. Hennepin County, MN 07/25/21
