We saw just a few pelicans today! This is likely the most American White Pelicans I've ever seen in flight together. I only got maybe 1/3rd of them in this photo. They were circling high above us over the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington. Most times it seemed like there were 2 to 3 separate groups, but more than once they appeared to combine for one massive "squadron." In this particular picture, a smaller group circling in one direction, passes underneath a larger group circling in the opposite direction. Hennepin County, MN 09/21/24

It was awesome to see a few Pelicans on Lake Pepin today! This one even got close enough for a photo. Frontenac State Park, Goodhue County, MN 10/10/23

On Saturday, we came across a bunch of American White Pelicans on the Mooers Lake section of the Mississippi River south of St. Paul. I rarely get opportunities to photograph pelicans without a fair amount of travel, so I nearly jumped out of the car before my wife found a place to pull over - LOL. A few of the birds were stretching out their bill pouches which made for some funny looks. In this photo we're seeing the underside of a pelicans bill as it points its head straight up.
