This Great Egret caught itself a snack while we rounded the retention ponds. The paths here provide a nice, small loop that is manageable after dinner. And I usually have my camera with in case there are Egrets or Herons around. Hennepin County, MN 08/09/23

This Great Egret was fishing at a local stormwater holding pond this evening and was quite successful. The light made the water an incredible greenish gold color but made the white bird look blue in most of my photos. In this one it actually looks white in comparison to the others. Right after another park visitor pointed out this Green Heron to me, I watched it strike a little fish. Initially the fish was impaled on the tip of the birds bill, but somehow just seconds later the bird had freed it and gulped it down in mid air. Hennepin County, MN 08/13/21

I've watched Green Herons lunge out at prey over a tremendous distance and still hold onto their perch above the water. But this is the first one I've ever seen go too far and fall right in! Luckily it DID nab the fish it was after and it got itself back out of the water in short order. Hennepin County, MN 05/24/21
