In Black Hills of South Dakota. Crazy Horse was born about 1840 and became a Lakota Indian Chief. Conflicts escalated as white settlers moved in. In 1866 Crazy Horse was part of the Indian forces who massacred 81 soldiers under Fedderman's command. He refused to honor treaty of 1868 which gave Lakota important land, including the Black Hills, to end fighting. In 1876 after discovery of gold in Black Hills all Lakota were ordered to reservations. Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull refused, and they were in battle which wiped out Custer at Little Bighorn. He surrendered in 1877 and died in struggle with soldiers four months later.

In Mitchell, South Dakota. The first Corn Palace was in 1892. Current building is 3rd. Each year it's decorated with a new theme, except during depression and WWI & WWII and Mitchell's Centennial Year. Made of native corn (275,000 ears cut in half), rye, milo, oat heads and sour dock. Scenes are drawn on black roofing paper and are marked where each of 11 colors of corn are nailed, like in a corn-by-number style.
