The church is located in the village of Zapalnya, which has been submerged in 1965 after the construction of the Zrebchevo dam. The church has been built in the 19th century, on a place located slightly above the village and that's why it still sticks out above the water. On a dry season, when the dam is more empty the church is accessible by foot.
On a hill near the church, there is an abandoned cemetery, in front of which a memorial plaque says: "The Village of Zapalnya, settled in the 15th century, abandoned in 1962"
Today the church is a favorite destination for the fans of photography who come specifically in order to take unforgettable pictures.
