The Star & Garter was noted as one of a small number of Preston pubs having entrances on 3 separate streets. The pub frontage faced Brook Street and was bounded by Brougham Street and Byron Street (nearest the camera). At the time of the photograph, the pub was under the proprietorship of Francis Bashall. Mr Bashall's son of the same name died in France in 1916 a casualty of WW1. The wedge shaped building seen behind the tram stanchion at left is John Catterall's, Plumbers and Decorators shop at 54-56 Fylde Road.
