Often seen in the backyard, these birds are gregarious in nature and forage in small groups of six to ten birds, a habit that has given them the popular name of Seven Sisters. The Jungle Babbler is a common resident breeding bird in most parts of the Indian Subcontinent and is often seen in gardens within large cities as well as in forested areas. This species, like most babblers, is non-migratory, and has short rounded wings and a weak flight. When foraging, some birds take up a high vantage point and act as sentinels. They are known to gather and mob potential predators such as snakes.

The Thamarassery-Lakkidi Ghat road, part of the National Highway [NH 212], which connects the region of Kerala south of Kozhikode district with Wayanad district. This scenic road is very well maintained and the view of the hills is a joy to behold.

This particular bird proved to be a very co-operative subject. Did not fly off even when I approached close. Also called the White-breasted Kingfisher. Chestnut-brown head, neck and under-body below breast; bright turquoise-blue above, often with greenish tinge; black flight-feathers and white wing-patch in flight; white chin, throat and breast distinctive; coral-red beak and legs. Solitary or scattered pairs atop overhead powerlines, poles or tree-tops.
