Though the Paradise Flycatcher is found all over South India in the winter months they are not often seen around my home. Saw this female on my neighbours mango tree. Females do not have the tail-streamers of the males and are rufous above and are white below. Also the females have a shorter crest. Both sexes have black heads but the females have an ashy-grey throat as can be seen clearly in this photo.
Found in pairs or often solitary, they flit from one branch to another looking for insects that form their primary diet. They have short legs and perch in an upright position. Strictly arboreal birds that are known to have a friendly disposition and are not too shy of humans.

My best shot yet of this svelte little beauty. I would have preferred getting a male for their long tail-streamers, but this bird posed well even after seeing me at the window. Indian Paradise Flycatchers are noisy birds uttering sharp skreek calls. They have short legs and sit very upright whilst perched prominently as can be seen in this photo. There are resident populations in southern India and Sri Lanka and so I get to see these birds often but they are never easy to capture. Elegant in flight they make short sallies while flitting through trees.

Another photo of the male of the species with its long tail-streamers. The males are usually white in colour with black head but this particular male is in the "rufous-morph" where they have rufous on the wings and tail and white on the belly. In some races it is said that the white form is absent. They flit from one branch to another looking for insects that form their primary diet.

I had sighted this male many times in the evenings and was lucky to capture it at last from the front balcony. I have photos of the less attractive female and was waiting to get a male. Males have these tail-streamers as clearly seen in this photo. These birds are just 20 cm long but the long tail-streamers double the length of the male birds. It has a glossy black crown and crest, blue eye-ring and a long narrow rounded tail. The males are usually white in colour with black head but this particular male is in the "rufous-morph" where they have rufous on the wings and tail and white on the belly. In some races it is said that the white form is absent. Found in pairs or often solitary, they flit from one branch to another looking for insects that form their primary diet. While watching the Sunbird that is pretty noisy I saw this female Paradise Flycatcher silently fly in also looking for breakfast. The females are just 20cms. long and do not have the tail-streamers of the males. Found solitary or in pairs though I have sadly never seen a male around. They make short sallies, flit through trees looking for insects that form part of their main diet. Strictly arboreal though sometimes decending to taller bushes.
