For me, one of *the* quintessential 'skyscrapers' with wonderfully clear detailing and a great sense of scale. The facade is composed of core-ten steel, which, through initial oxidation (rusting), it protects itself from further rusting and can stay exposed to the elements without any further treatment. The patina on this structure is exquisite.
When it was built, it was the highest structure in Chicago.

City Hall is to the left and several ugly skyscrapers are to the right. The Lego-one with the cornice on top is actually from an architect I thought I once respected--I just forgot which one. Bofill? Yep. He's the culprit. In fact, had I really been paying attention, I probably wouldn't have posted this or even taken the shot had I noticed that eyesore sooner. It annoys me that much that somebody can ruin a beautiful stretch of the Chicago River and even make a lot of money doing so.
Getting back to this beautiful building....
If one looks carefully, one can see how the main columns are reduced in section towards the top.
