Tagebau Hambach
Bergheim-Elsdorf, Germany

A simply enormous open-pit surface mine for brown coal (lignite). Covering roughly 45 km², the lowest point is approx. 300 meters below sea-level.
It is still very much in use, but a moratorium for this type of coal was decided upon for the year 2038.
Lignite is the 'dirtiest' and most inefficient type of coal, causing the most environmental, physical and social harm on a local and global scale. Numerous little towns have been 'relocated' and the remaining ghost-towns torn down one by one. Even one large section of an Autobahn (A4 Köln-Aachen) was moved about 3 km south a few years back to allow for a larger pit.
Despite all of this, one is amazed at the scale and the logistics of such an operation. It was our first time there despite the close proximity to Köln.

Here, from a slightly different position, one can barely begin to grasp the sheer size of this gaping wound. It is currently approx. 45 km² and is planned to grow to approx. 80 km².

Quality isn't quite like the others, as it is from my cell (also, hence the totally blown-out sky).
